Gallery Notes

A photograph from 1979 shows Glen Loates holding a boreal owl inches from his drawing. The story behind a discipline almost no one practises now.
Over the course of an artist's career, their signature will change many times. The changes can be subtle or drastic, but they all serve a purpose. For instance, Canadian artist Glen Loates is best known for his depictions of Canadian wildlife and landscapes. His earlier work features a simple signature consisting of his initials, "GL."
The Mint told Glen Loates exactly what to draw for the 75th anniversary of D-Day. What he brought to it was the boot.
The Ontario College of Art turned him down: not enough academic credits, and nothing they could teach him. What he had instead was a museum, and twenty years later it gave him a solo show.
