Two Ruby-throated Hummingbirds at a Trumpet Vine — one hovering to feed, one perched and watching — the orange-red trumpet flowers large and vivid around them. The Trumpet Vine is co-evolved with hummingbirds, its flower shape and colour adapted to exactly these birds, and Glen painted the relationship with the same ecological awareness he brought to his columbine hummingbird composition.
The two birds allow a comparison of postures: the hovering bird's wings blurred with motion, the perched bird still and sharp. Both are rendered at the level of detail that requires close study of the actual species.
