A Great Horned Owl perches on a pine branch — turned slightly sideways, the yellow eye regarding the viewer with the absolute composure of the largest owl in North America. The plumage is painted with extraordinary care: the intricate barring of the breast feathers, the buff facial disc, the ear tufts lifted. The pine needles behind the owl are soft and secondary; the owl itself is completely present.
Glen painted the Great Horned Owl across his career — it was one of his most important subjects, the apex predator of the Canadian night forest. This painting is among his most formally composed owl portraits: the bird placed in the middle of the canvas, the background stripped back, nothing to compete with the bird's authority.
