A chipmunk has found the cottage deck table — it sits between the terracotta pots, surrounded by spilled peanuts, cheerfully indifferent to its status as an uninvited guest. The flowers in the pots are painted with the same botanical care Glen brought to his wildflower studies: geraniums, portulaca, chives in bloom. The weathered cedar deck, the summer light, the garden in the background — this is a summer afternoon in Ontario, the kind anyone who has owned a cottage knows by heart.
This piece sits slightly apart in Glen's catalogue — domestic where most of his work is wild, gentle where much of it is formally demanding. It is painterly and warm, the coloured pencil medium giving it a light that watercolour would have handled more austerely. This remains one of his most beloved and accessible subjects.
