A Trumpeter Swan family on a northern lake — the white adults and their grey cygnets moving across still water, the reflections perfect in the calm. This is one of Glen's most serene compositions: the swans' white completely luminous against the blue of the water, the cygnets' grey a perfect tonal bridge between the white adults and the dark water. The landscape behind is barely indicated — treeline, sky, reflection — everything secondary to the family on the water.
Glen's swan paintings are among his most formally beautiful — the simplicity of the subject, white birds on blue water, requires complete confidence in the handling of the watercolour.
