The view from below the surface: a Belted Kingfisher has punched through the water and is diving toward a Rainbow Trout, the air bubble trail behind it and the scatter of small fry around it painted with the precision of an artist who has studied this moment as thoroughly as any other. The trout rises toward the intruder; the outcome is suspended. This is one of Glen's most technically ambitious compositions — two worlds visible at once, the rippled surface above and the underwater landscape below, rendered with complete conviction.
Glen was as fascinated by fish as by birds and mammals, and his aquatic compositions demonstrate the same field observation and anatomical knowledge he brought to his terrestrial subjects. The Rainbow Trout's iridescent flank, the kingfisher's waterproof plumage still shedding droplets — both are painted from direct study.
