A Red-tailed Hawk in level flight, carrying a meadow vole — the diagnostic rust-red tail fanned and vivid, the wings spread in the full soaring posture, the prey hanging from the talons. This 1978 watercolour is one of Glen's finest raptor in-flight compositions: the hawk's position — turning slightly, the wing angled to show the full pattern of the flight feathers — allows the viewer to see the bird from below, which is how we most often encounter Red-tails in the field.
Glen's ability to render a bird in flight convincingly required a complete understanding of wing anatomy and the specific postures of powered versus soaring flight. The Red-tailed Hawk is painted with that understanding fully in command.
