A young cougar sits at the foot of a sunlit bank, beneath a tangle of bare, pale branches. Its gaze has dropped to the ground in front of it, where a butterfly has settled with its wings half open beside a few blades of new grass. The kitten’s coat still carries the dark spots of its first months, and its blue eyes are fixed on the butterfly with the stillness that comes just before a cat moves.
Glen painted it in 1991, and the title belongs to the moment as much as the season: a curious young predator meeting something small that will not stay still. He gave the butterfly’s wings the same exact attention as the kitten’s whiskers and paws.
