A winter lane recedes into the distance under bare elms and pines, the ruts frozen, the verges deep in snow — and there, in the middle of the road, a cottontail rabbit sitting perfectly still, caught between one bound and the next. The landscape fills almost the entire canvas; the rabbit is small, the country large. The red berries on the bare branches to the right are the painting's only warm accent.
This is Glen working as a landscape painter who happens to have placed an animal in the scene — the result is a painting about winter Ontario as much as about rabbits. The coloured pencil medium is ideal for the subject: the fibrous quality of bare branches in cold light, the muffled tones of a snow-covered road. This piece is one of his most atmospheric and spacious compositions.
