A Canada Warbler — a flash of yellow and grey — hovers at a Jack-in-the-pulpit plant, wings spread mid-flutter, as though stopping to investigate the strange hooded flower. The botanical composition is extraordinary: the Jack-in-the-pulpit rendered in full detail — the striped spathe, the glossy three-part leaves, the spotted stem — while the warbler provides the punctuation of movement and colour. Signed 1972.
This painting represents two of Glen's deepest disciplines simultaneously — his ornithological precision and his botanical eye. He treated both with equal seriousness, spending the same time in the field observing wildflowers as he did watching birds. This piece is among the most botanically accomplished in his catalogue.
