A Brown Creeper works its way down a massive cedar trunk — the bird almost invisible against the deeply furrowed bark, exactly as nature intended. This is the challenge Glen set himself: to paint a bird whose entire survival strategy is camouflage, without making it disappear from the painting. He solved it by rendering the bark with such meticulous attention to colour and texture that the creeper's subtle plumage becomes legible by contrast. Signed and dated 1978.
The composition is vertical and dramatic — the trunk fills most of the canvas, the bird small but precisely placed at the focal point. Glen spent years studying bird specimens at the Royal Ontario Museum; the anatomical accuracy of the creeper's curved bill and stiffened tail feathers is a product of that discipline.
