This is the painting. In 1982, Glen walked into the Oval Office and presented this watercolour of a bald eagle to President Ronald Reagan, a gift he painted and conceived himself, accepted by the President on behalf of the American people. Reagan's letter of thanks, on White House letterhead, remains in the Loates family archive.
What you are looking at is the work itself: a single bald eagle settling onto a weathered branch, wings still spread wide, every feather rendered with the precision that makes Glen's wildlife unmistakable. It is also one of his most celebrated watercolours — the medium he is most known for, and the one in which Canadian wildlife art has no equivalent. This gift made Glen the first Canadian artist represented at the White House.
