In the winter of 1989, Glen Loates walked out of his studio into his own back yard, where his ten-year-old son, Michael, had just finished building a snowman.
The snowman was wearing Michael's knit toque and both of his mitts. The briar pipe hooked over one twig arm was Glen's own.
While he was painting, one mitt came off and dropped into the snow. He looked at it and decided it was better where it had fallen, so he left it there and painted it lying in the snow. He gave it room, too. The snowman sits well over to the right, and roughly two thirds of the sheet is open snow with the boy's tracks still in it.
That decision is the whole picture. A man who spent weeks counting feathers on museum study skins knew exactly what he was doing when he chose to leave something alone.
He wrote two things on the sheet in pencil, in his own hand: the title, and "Outside my Studio."
The original is a watercolour, 11 by 8.5 inches, and it hangs in Michael Loates' home today. It was painted, first, for the ten-year-old who built the subject.
