Cette affiche de calmar géant à collectionner, intitulée RECHERCHÉ ! par Glen Loates, a été créée pour sensibiliser à la capture du calmar géant. Elle a été affichée dans toutes les régions côtières de Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador. À l'époque, Glen Loates avait été nommé l'artiste scientifique qui travaillait en étroite collaboration avec le Dr Fredrick Aldrich pour documenter et étudier cette créature insaisissable des profondeurs.

Cette affiche est produite sur du papier sans acide avec des encres d'archives pour garantir sa durée de vie sans décoloration ni perte de couleur. Elle est imprimée avec une bordure blanche de 2,5 cm autour de l'image pour permettre un encadrement et un passe-partout futurs si désiré.

Glen Loates R.C.A. a consacré sa vie à observer attentivement le monde naturel. Essentiellement autodidacte, il a commencé sa carrière professionnelle à onze ans et, en 1974, il a été élu membre à part entière de l'Académie royale des arts du Canada.

Il travaille à partir d'études sur le terrain et de peaux d'étude de musée plutôt que de photographies, réalisant jusqu'à quarante-cinq esquisses au crayon d'un animal avant de le peindre, et il commence chaque tableau par l'œil.

En 1982, le président Ronald Reagan a accepté dans le Bureau ovale le pygargue à tête blanche grandeur nature de Glen, un don que Glen a lui-même conçu et peint, faisant de lui le premier artiste canadien représenté à la Maison-Blanche.

About the Artist

Glen Loates R.C.A. has spent his life paying a particular kind of attention to the natural world. He never attended art school.

His professional career began at eleven, when he designed the Canadian Cancer Society’s daffodil logo, used by the organization for several decades. In 1968 he won the Royal Philatelic Award for Canada’s first full-colour postage stamp, the Gray Jay. In 1974 he was elected to full membership in the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, the first wildlife painter invited to join.

In December 1982, he presented his life-size watercolour of a Bald Eagle personally to President Ronald Reagan in the Oval Office, a gift from the people of Canada to the people of the United States. Reagan called it “a breathtaking representation of America’s symbol.” He is the first Canadian artist to be represented at the White House. His originals have also been presented to His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and to Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau.

His work has been exhibited at the Royal Ontario Museum, the British Museum, the Alexander Koenig Museum in Bonn, and the McMichael Canadian Collection. Three major volumes document his career: The Art of Glen Loates (1977), Birds of North America (1979), and A Brush with Life (1984).

He is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and the Explorers Club.
