# Pheasant in Apple Tree — Gallery Canvas

A Ring-necked Pheasant cock perches in an apple tree — the extraordinary iridescent plumage in full autumn display, the red face, the white collar, the long tail: every element of the male pheasant's remarkable appearance rendered with the precision Glen brought to all his bird portraits. This 1985 watercolour places the bird in a gnarled orchard apple tree, the small apples still hanging, the leaves turning. The composition is formal and completely confident.

The pheasant's plumage is one of the most technically demanding subjects in bird art — the interplay of green, purple, gold, and rufous in the body feathers requires a controlled approach to colour mixing that Glen achieved through layered transparent washes. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts; this pheasant portrait is one of his most formally accomplished bird works.
