# Indian Pipe — Giclée on Paper

Indian Pipe — Monotropa uniflora — painted from a living specimen in the Chippawa area of northern Quebec, completed Friday, August 1, 1967. Glen's field notes are inscribed at the bottom of the painting: the species name in full, the location, the date, the notation that this was painted at actual size from a living plant. This is botanical illustration at its most precise and most personally invested.

Indian Pipe is one of the strangest plants in the eastern Canadian forest — a total saprophyte, containing no chlorophyll, living on fungi in the forest floor and emerging ghostly white from the leaf litter. Glen chose to paint it not as a curiosity but as a subject worthy of full attention: the drooping flower head, the waxy white stem, the root structure emerging from the humus, all rendered with the same care he gave his large mammals. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts; this field study is among his most distinctive and intimate botanical works.

Produced as a museum-quality giclée on archival, acid-free paper using fade-resistant inks. A 1" white border surrounds the image, ready for the framer of your choice.
