# Red Fox — Giclée on Paper

A Red Fox pouncing across winter stubble — the body compressed and lunging forward, nose down toward something in the frozen grass at the lower left. This is the fox's characteristic hunting posture: the high-arc leap that allows it to pin small rodents beneath the snow. The field notes at the lower right record the specimen data — the ROM provenance that underpins Glen's anatomical precision. The fox's vivid orange coat against the pale winter field is compositionally bold and completely accurate.

Glen worked from actual Red Fox specimens in the Royal Ontario Museum collection, and this painting shows what that kind of reference produces: the specific weight and proportion of the animal, the way the fur compresses differently at the joints, the black stockings and white-tipped tail rendered with the same care as the body. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts; his Red Fox studies are among his most celebrated and collected mammal works.
