# Screech Owl with Field Mouse — Giclée on Paper

A Screech Owl perches on an autumn birch branch, a field mouse hanging from its talons. The composition is built from the leaves of the birch — some still green, some turning, one fallen and hanging from a twig — with the owl at the centre, looking directly outward. This 1973 watercolour balances the precision of the owl's intricately streaked plumage with the casualness of the autumn birch setting.

The Screech Owl's cryptic plumage — all bark-brown streaks and mottles — makes it one of the most technically demanding small owl subjects in Ontario wildlife art. Glen rendered the intricate patterning with the same fine-brush patience he brought to his larger owl portraits. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts; his owl paintings across multiple species are among the most accomplished in Canadian wildlife art.
