# Fox Kits — Giclée on Paper

Three red fox kits at the den entrance — one standing alert on a pine-cone-strewn slope, two others resting close together, all three orientated in slightly different directions with the alert, radar-eared attention of young predators learning to pay attention. Dandelions bloom in the surrounding grass; a pine branch arches overhead. This 1985 watercolour is among Glen's finest young-animal compositions: the kits' proportions are exactly right, the den entrance specific rather than generic, the surrounding habitat observed.

Fox kits at the den were a subject Glen returned to across his career — few wildlife subjects combine the visual appeal of the young with the drama of the predator-in-training quite as effectively. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts; his wildlife studies of young animals are among the most loved in his catalogue.
