# Bald Eagle Portrait — Giclée on Paper

This is Glen with the colour stripped away. A graphite drawing of a single bald eagle — head and shoulders only, the eye sharp, the feathers of the white nape rendered with the patience of a draughtsman who has spent his life looking at birds. There is nowhere for technique to hide in a pencil work of this scale, and Glen does not flinch.

Drawing was always the foundation of his practice — long before the watercolours that made him famous, he was filling sketchbooks with anatomical studies done from skin specimens at the Royal Ontario Museum. This piece carries that same disciplined eye. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts; his bald eagle painting was presented to U.S. President Reagan in 1983.
