# Canada Lynx Portrait — Giclée on Paper

The lynx fills the frame — a full-face graphite portrait, the eyes pale and direct, the facial ruff enormous and dense with pencilled hair. There is nowhere to look except directly back at the animal. Glen rendered the lynx's face with the meticulous graphite work that distinguished his drawing practice from his watercolours: every individual strand of the ruff suggested rather than laboured, the eyes caught with a quality of attention that photographs rarely achieve.

Drawing was the foundation on which all of Glen's painting rested. This portrait demonstrates why — the technical discipline is absolute, and the result is an animal that seems entirely present. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts; his graphite wildlife portraits are among the finest in the Canadian tradition.
