Mallard ducklings — a cluster of them, still in their natal down, gathered at the water's edge among the reeds. Glen painted ducklings with the same completeness he gave all his young-animal subjects: the specific downy texture of newly hatched birds, the proportions not yet resolved into adult form, the expression of complete absorption in the immediate world. The habitat surroundings — the reeds, the shallow water, the muddy bank — are as specifically observed as the birds themselves.
