# Chipmunk — Giclée on Paper

A chipmunk among autumn oak leaves — maple foliage golden above, dried leaves and blue bittersweet berries scattered on the forest floor below. This 1982 watercolour is characteristic of Glen at his most observational: the chipmunk is almost incidental in its own painting, the forest floor given equal weight and attention. Every leaf is an individual leaf, every twig placed where gravity and autumn decay would place it.

Glen believed the background was as important as the subject — that an animal pulled from its habitat and placed against a neutral wash was always slightly false. This painting argues the opposite case: the chipmunk belongs here because you can see the exact forest floor it lives in. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts whose wildlife studies have been collected internationally for over five decades.
