# King of the Midnight Sun — Giclée on Paper

A polar bear walks the edge of the Arctic pack ice as the midnight sun hangs low on the horizon — the sky layered in orange, purple, and deep blue, the ice surface catching the reflected light. This is one of Glen's most dramatic and panoramic works: the bear is in full side profile, moving with the unhurried purpose of an animal that owns its terrain, the landscape stretching unbroken to the curved horizon behind it.

Executed in coloured pencil, the painting achieves a luminosity that watercolour would have handled differently — the midnight sun rendered as a point of intensity in the orange band of the horizon, the ice surface below it lit from both sky and reflected water. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts whose Arctic and northern wildlife work carries the authority of an artist who understood both the science and the poetry of these environments.
