Two Ruby-crowned Kinglets on a hemlock branch — one with the ruby crown patch just visible, both rendered with the fine-brush precision that the species demands. The Ruby-crowned Kinglet is one of Canada's smallest songbirds, a bird easily overlooked in the field but extraordinarily detailed up close. This 1987 watercolour shows Glen at his finest in the small-bird genre: the kinglets are exactly the right size relative to the hemlock branches, the plumage pattern precise, the postures specific and alive.

Glen's small songbird studies demonstrate the full breadth of his observational discipline — the kinglet required as much attention as the eagle, the same careful study from specimens and field observation.
