Shooting Stars — Dodecatheon — in a luminous emerald green setting, the vivid pink reflexed petals of the flowers bright against the atmospheric background. This 1964 painting is one of Glen's most atmospheric early botanicals: the flowers rendered with botanical accuracy — the reflexed petals, the dark anthers forming the pointed tip that gives the flower its name — while the surrounding space dissolves into a rich green haze.

Glen's early botanical studies show a young artist finding his own way with atmospheric colour — the green background is not merely a setting but an environment, the light seeming to come from within it. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts; Shooting Stars is one of his most distinctive and atmospherically ambitious early botanical works.
