This 1985 watercolour places the bird in a gnarled orchard apple tree, the small apples still hanging, the leaves turning. The composition is formal and completely confident.

The pheasant's plumage is one of the most technically demanding subjects in bird art — the interplay of green, purple, gold, and rufous in the body feathers requires a controlled approach to colour mixing that Glen achieved through layered transparent washes. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts; this pheasant portrait is one of his most formally accomplished bird works.
