# Tiger Portrait — Giclée on Paper

A tiger in close portrait — the face filling most of the canvas, rendered in coloured pencil on a warm toned ground. This 1984 study is one of Glen's finest big-cat portraits: the tiger's facial anatomy — the asymmetric stripe pattern, the pale inner face, the amber eyes, the whisker arrangement — rendered with complete precision, the toned paper ground giving the whole image the warmth of natural light. The result is a portrait of absolute presence.

Glen's tiger studies required the same kind of specimen research and careful observation he brought to his Canadian fauna — the stripe pattern of each individual tiger is unique, and Glen rendered it as such. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts; his big-cat portraits are among the most technically accomplished and widely admired in his catalogue.
