# The Apple Orchard — Giclée on Paper

An old apple orchard in late autumn — the gnarled trunks and bare branches of mature apple trees, the last of the small apples still clinging, the orchard floor deep in fallen leaves. This is a landscape painting about time and endurance: these trees are old, they have borne fruit for decades, and Glen gave them the same attention he would give a large animal — the specific character of each trunk, the way the branches divide and divide again, the texture of the bark.

Glen's orchard compositions sit between his formal botanical work and his landscape practice, combining the close observation of plant anatomy with the atmospheric quality of a landscape. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts; this apple orchard painting is one of his most evocative and regionally specific Ontario landscape works.
