A Smallmouth Bass in close pursuit of a crayfish — the bass's spots and vertical barring precisely rendered, the crayfish's defensive posture exact, both caught in the specific quality of light that filters through the clear, rocky-bottomed lakes where Smallmouth hold territory. This is one of Glen's finest freshwater predator-prey studies: both animals rendered with the same careful attention, the underwater environment as convincingly realised as the species it contains.

Glen's freshwater fish studies were as carefully grounded in field observation as his mammal and bird work — he fished Ontario lakes and rivers extensively and understood fish behaviour from the angler's perspective as well as the naturalist's. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts; his fish and underwater paintings are prized by anglers and collectors across Canada.
