# Scarlet Tanagers — Giclée on Paper

Two Scarlet Tanagers in a spring maple — a breeding male in full scarlet-and-black plumage perched above, a second male in transitional plumage launching from below, wings open, the extraordinary orange-red of the moulting bird even more vivid than the pure scarlet of the adult. This 1985 coloured pencil study shows two states of the same bird simultaneously: the complete breeding plumage and the partial autumn dress.

The Scarlet Tanager is one of the most chromatically dramatic birds in Ontario, and Glen gave the subject the treatment it deserves — the maple canopy rendered in the fresh spring green that best sets off the scarlet plumage, each bird's plumage precisely differentiated. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts; his bird-and-botanical compositions are among the most beloved in his catalogue.

Produced as a museum-quality giclée on archival, acid-free paper using fade-resistant inks. A 1" white border surrounds the image, ready for the framer of your choice.
