# Monarch Butterflies — Giclée on Paper

Two Monarch Butterflies on a milkweed plant — the larger one with wings fully open showing the iconic orange-and-black patterning, the smaller one at rest beside it, wings vertical. The milkweed leaves are rendered with the same care Glen brought to all his botanical subjects: the large waxy leaves, the specific venation, the slightly glaucous surface. The composition is clean and spare — white background, plant, butterflies — which gives the orange of the Monarchs maximum intensity.

Glen painted the Monarch with the awareness of a naturalist who understood its significance: the annual migration, the milkweed dependency, the way a single species can carry so much ecological meaning. The painting is both beautiful and, implicitly, a document of a creature worth caring about. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts; his butterfly and insect studies demonstrate the breadth of his observational range.
