# Jaguar Cub — Giclée on Paper

A jaguar cub in the rainforest canopy — draped over a branch, watching the viewer from between hanging vines and broad tropical leaves still wet with rain. The rosette patterning of the cub's coat is rendered with absolute precision: the black rings, the tawny centres, the white chest visible below. A woolly caterpillar on the branch beside the cub adds the note of scale that makes the painting work compositionally.

Glen painted big cat cubs with a particular intensity — the contradiction between the animal's present smallness and its future power, the eyes already carrying the focus of a predator even when the body still carries the softness of youth. The tropical setting required research beyond his northern field work: the plant species are correct, the dappled rainforest light convincingly rendered. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts whose wildlife range extended across multiple continents.
