# Golden Eagle — Giclée on Paper

A Golden Eagle stands over a young rabbit on a sun-bleached rock face — wings still spread to balance, the great dark-brown form filling the canvas, the kill at its feet. This 1981 watercolour does not sentimentalize the scene: the eagle is not heroic or menacing, just efficient, doing what eagles do. The body language is proprietary and entirely calm.

Glen spent years studying raptor anatomy from both live specimens and the ROM collection. The Golden Eagle presented a particular challenge — the scale of it, the weight of the bird on those taloned feet, the way the brown plumage catches and absorbs light differently from a smaller hawk. He met all of it without flinching. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts; this painting is one of his most dramatically composed raptor works.
