A Crimson Cattleya Orchid in full bloom — the magenta-pink petals large and ruffled, the orange-yellow throat a burst of warmth at the centre, the pseudobulbs and strap leaves rendered in the yellow-green of a well-tended plant. This 1994 coloured pencil study is among Glen's finest botanical works: the flower's complex structure rendered with complete precision, the petals' translucency suggested through layered coloured pencil without losing their weight.

Glen's botanical studies demanded the same field discipline as his wildlife work — close observation, anatomical accuracy, the patience to record what is actually there. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts; his botanical works are collected alongside his wildlife paintings worldwide.
