A parent loon glides on glass-still water with two young pressed close — one tucked under a wing, the other riding quietly alongside. Glen captured what every Canadian who has spent a summer at the lake recognizes: the particular hush of a loon family at rest, the world held briefly in calm.

This is one of his pure watercolours, the medium Glen is most celebrated for. Decades of field observation are what make a painting like this possible — the patterning of the adult's plumage and the soft down of the chicks rendered with the precision of someone who looked, and looked again. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts; his watercolour work hangs at the Smithsonian Institution and was personally presented to a sitting U.S. President.
