# Pickerel Weed — Giclée on Paper

Pickerelweed in a summer marsh — the purple flower spikes rising from heart-shaped leaves still beaded with rain, a damselfly perched at the top, the whole composition dissolved at the edges into the atmospheric blue-green of the water around it. This 1964 painting is among Glen's most luminous early botanical works: the Pickerelweed rendered with complete precision at centre, the background impressionistic and atmospheric, the result a painting that is both scientifically accurate and visually dreamy.

Pickerelweed is one of the most common and most beautiful of Ontario's wetland plants, and Glen gave it a treatment that matches that beauty. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts; this early botanical is one of his most distinctive and beloved wildflower works.
