# Into The Shallows — Gallery Canvas

A Mallard drake wades into the shallows at the edge of a lake — the water so clear that the sandy bottom and the duck's feet are both visible. This 1985 watercolour is deceptively simple: the duck is rendered with complete precision, but what makes the painting extraordinary is the water. Glen captured the way a shallow lake edge holds colour from the sky above and the sand below simultaneously, the ripple patterns on the surface suggesting movement without disturbing the calm.

Glen observed mallards closely at Ontario wetlands across his career, and this painting shows the depth of that familiarity — the specific posture of a duck entering water, the way the neck shortens as the head drops, the orange feet visible through the transparent shallows. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts; his waterfowl studies are prized in collections across North America.
