# Loon in Calm Blue Waters — Gallery Canvas

A Common Loon with two chicks riding on its back — the parent's brilliant summer plumage rendered in full detail, the two grey chicks still downy and round, both looking outward in different directions. The coloured pencil medium gives the piece a warmth that suits the subject: this is a family portrait, and the atmosphere is soft and intimate. The blue water surrounds them in a haze of atmosphere.

This image is one of the most immediately moving in Glen's catalogue — the chicks on the parent's back, that specific parental behaviour that loons perform while the young are small enough to be carried, is a sight most people have only glimpsed from a distance. Glen brought it up close and rendered it with the completeness of a naturalist who had spent time observing exactly this. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts; his loon family paintings are among his most widely held works in Canadian collections.
