# Black Bear and Honey Bees — Gallery Canvas

A full-grown black bear tears into a rotting stump, head thrown back, completely indifferent to the cloud of bees rising around it. It is one of the oldest scenes in the Canadian wilderness — bear and bees, a negotiation that always ends the same way. Glen captured it with the watercolour looseness and confidence of an artist who has spent enough time in the boreal to know exactly what this looks like in afternoon light.

The surrounding vegetation — ferns, young aspen, summer undergrowth — is painted with the same botanical attention Glen applied to his wildlife subjects. Nothing in this image is incidental. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts; his work hangs in museum collections and was personally presented to a sitting U.S. President.
