Most of Glen's finished watercolours were preceded by dozens of preparatory studies — sketches of wing positions, talon studies, head turns, the ways light fell on a bird at different times of day. This piece pulls those threads together into a single composition: the bald eagle in three stances, executed in mixed watercolour and graphite against a soft wash of cliff and water.

It is, in essence, an artist's working sketchbook made beautiful. For collectors who appreciate the discipline behind Glen's most famous wildlife portraits, this is a rare window into his process. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts; his bald eagle was personally presented to U.S. President Reagan in 1983 and remains the first Canadian artwork accepted into the White House collection.
