# Queen Anne's Lace — Bag

Queen Anne's Lace and chicory in a summer meadow — the white umbels of the carrot flower at different stages of opening and closing, the blue chicory providing the chromatic counterpoint, the whole composition built from grasses and stems weaving through one another against a soft blue-green summer background. This is one of Glen's most atmospheric and loosely handled wildflower compositions: the summer meadow rendered as atmosphere and suggestion as much as botanical precision, the flowers luminous and half-dissolved in light.

Glen painted roadside wildflower communities — the mixed-species assemblages that grow along Ontario back roads in July — with the awareness of someone who had stopped to look at them carefully. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts; this meadow wildflower study is one of his most summery and evocative botanical works.
